What is the YKI test?
YKI examinations are intended for adults and assess practical general-language
proficiency. The test focuses on how well a participant can use the language
in everyday, work and study situations rather than only on formal grammar knowledge.
For many applicants, the Finnish-language YKI test is especially important
when an official language certificate is required for a citizenship application.
YKI preparation
YKI preparation helps students become familiar with the test structure,
strengthen practical language skills and practise the areas in which they
need the most support.
Speaking and oral confidence
Listening comprehension
Reading and identifying main ideas
Writing and text organisation
Vocabulary development
Understanding task types
Time management and test-day preparation
Who is YKI preparation for?
Preparation is suitable for students who want to prepare systematically
for the Finnish YKI test, need an official language certificate, want to
strengthen specific test skills or would benefit from teacher feedback.
Training can be planned according to the student’s starting level, target
level and schedule, and can be provided as private, pair or small-group instruction.
Test-day rules and results
Candidates should arrive on time and follow the supervisors’ instructions.
Dictionaries, study materials and electronic devices may not be used during the test.
Each subtest receives its own proficiency rating. At the basic level,
accepted ratings are 1 or 2; at the intermediate level, 3 or 4; and at
the advanced level, 5 or 6.
Start preparing early
Success in the YKI test requires both language proficiency and familiarity
with the test format. Regular practice, feedback on speaking and writing,
and familiarity with typical task types can make preparation more effective.
